For a while I had been feeling sorrowful about how divided our country has been and how much political incivility had been taking place. But I remembered the reason for that is that we all love our country so much, we all want what is best for it; and have a diverse series of ideas of what that means, precisely.
It’s good to be reminded that all of this controversy stems from loving the same thing so fiercely.
The first photo is taken at 4:37PM Thursday May 16th, 2019, from where I work. Lower Manhattan is visible, and in the distance is the Verrazano Bridge, named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who began the written history of New York harbor in 1524 (1), when he sailed through on a French ship. The second photo was taken at 5:46PM from the new South Street Seaport. Walking the few blocks between the office and the Pier it was fantastic to observe several members of the 2019 Wall Street Run and Heart Walk in their race gear on Maiden Lane, presumably on their way to the Heart Event, which raised 2.28 million dollars for the American Heart Association, according to the website(2) on Thursday night.
The third photo is of the same part of lower Manhattan as the second photo; please note the top of the building under construction, visible in the bottom right corner. At 5:50PM a rainbow appeared over lower Manhattan. It appeared for about a minute from my vantage point. I had walked over to the East side because I wanted to see the POTUS land in Manhattan, and had wondered if it would be obvious to a casual observer that he had arrived.
Just a few moments later, the collective anticipation of the people on the waterfront, the boats in the river and harbor, and the aircraft in the skies, were met on the southernmost part of the east side of an island that used to be called New Amsterdam, and that once was inhabited by the Lenape people.

What will it look like in 200 years?
