“Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz”

“Not gonna act conceited and say I'm the best

But I'm guaranteed to pass any kind of test” Biz, from “Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz”

The influence of Biz Markie’s creative and quirky vision, clearly evident in his lyrics and videos, is refracted throughout hip hop. 3rd Bass’ “The Gas Face” (1989) seems to be a response to Biz’ “Vapors” (1988) as it ponders the evolution of a series of sentiments that consider the nature of authentic support, allyship and friendship.

What does it mean to support someone, if we only root for them when they are winning? And while we are at it, how can we deconstruct the racially motivated narratives too often used to denigrate and delegitimize the successes and triumphs of our friends?

These are just some of the quandaries addressed in the back and forth between these two songs. To survey the late artist’s broader influence on hip hop, and pop music generally, could fill at least one book.  RIP.
